Jean-Antoine Watteau
1684 – 1721
Jean-Antoine Watteau was the French painter who invented the fête galante: dreamy scenes of elegant couples, music and theatre in leafy parks. Working in Paris in the early eighteenth century, he brought a new lightness and poetry to painting and became the founding figure of the Rococo. After his early death his compositions were spread across Europe through fine engravings.
